Season 1
Handsome, young vicar Sidney Chambers shares his spiritual duties with a love of jazz, complicated relationships with women, and an enthusiasm for amateur sleuthing. When the concern of a parishioner compels him to dig deeper into a grisly suicide, he gets on the nerve of a tired, local law enforcement officer—Inspector Geordie Keating. Fortunately, the cleric and the cop bond over their war service, their love of a good pub, and their competitive instincts—in this case, for backgammon.
Season 2
The burning issues of post–World War II Britain provide the backdrop to the new season's cases: class conflict, the death penalty, homosexuality, the looming sexual revolution, the communist threat, rationing, and the persistent effects of combat on war veterans such as Sidney and Geordie, who are just trying to get on with their lives and make society safe, secure, and a bit fun.
Season 3
When Sidney Chambers begins receiving sinister anonymous phone calls, he realises he is connected to a series of murders targeting respected figures in the community. Leonard bonds with Hilary as she cares for her dying father, while Geordie's investigation of the killings leads him to a mysterious home for people with disabilities.
Season 4
It's 1956, and Elvis Presley has Geordie grumbling about the decline of decency, while mold in the vestry has Mrs. Chapman grumbling about baking soda vs. vinegar. But it's action, not grousing, that Sidney craves, and when an African American reverend arrives to speak about religion's role in the civil rights movement, Sidney finds inspiration…and perhaps something more!
Season 5
It's 1957, and Will Davenport has settled into his role as the vicar of Grantchester, preaching to a packed church. His best friend, Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, has come to accept his wife Cathy's commitment to her job – just about. Mrs C. happily juggles her roles as the vicarage housekeeper and being a well-to-do married woman, and after a trip to Marrakech, even Leonard has managed to carve out some happiness with Daniel. But Will's faith will be thoroughly tested as he and Geordie are reminded once more that there's darkness lurking in their little corner of Cambridgeshire...
Season 6
It’s 1958 and trouble is brewing in the Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester. Reverend Will Davenport relishes his role as a firebrand vicar, willing to rock the boat and challenge conventions to help people. But the very role he loves puts him at odds with his own ideals when his kind-hearted curate, Leonard Finch is caught up in a scandal.
Season 7
With a new decade just around the corner, the question of what the future holds is on everyone’s minds, not least Will's, but before the 50s roll over into the swinging sixties there are some crimes to solve and some life-changing decisions to be made that might change life in Grantchester forever.
Season 8
Will is the happiest he's ever been, but his world will be rocked by a terrible accident. He's always preached the word of a compassionate God – but how can he now, when his despair leads him on a dangerous downward spiral? Geordie has found a new contentment in his relationship with Cathy, but when they are both confronted with shocking announcements at work their happiness is threatened. As Mrs C, Leonard, Jack and Daniel rally around, both Will and Geordie find themselves in unfamiliar, emotional waters and murder is always around the corner.
Season 9
It's 1961 and life is good for Will and Geordie. The families are always together, from Sunday lunches to planning summer holidays and with honorary Grandparents Mrs C and Jack, and adopted uncles Daniel and Leonard, it's one big happy family! But when Will is approached with a life changing offer, can he leave Grantchester, and Geordie behind?

User Reviews
Almost by necessity this description will include some spoilers. It would be useless to discuss eight seasons without some reveals.
My wife really loves the show. Don’t get me wrong; I also like it, just not as much. To be honest, a weakness I find might even be a strength to her. The plots behind their murder case are usually interesting. Boy oh boy, do they get a lot of confessions. But better that than then two of them always having to show up in court to testify against the perpetrators. They allow both Geordie and the vicars their case-solving moments. Geordie mostly gets his through his experience, legwork and instincts. The vicars just know a lot about a lot of stuff, and can talk to the witnesses, etc., in a way that draws them out of their protective shells. Miss Scott is also a great character. Even shallow PC Larry is given more depth in season 8 and becomes much more sympathetic. It was nice to see.
Away from the police station, we find one of the better encore casts out there. The performers playing Mrs. Chapman, Leonard, Daniel, Cathy Keaton and a few more are excellent and usually quite beleavable.
And even the two lead actors who combine to play the vicars are great actors— I just don’t like their characters. Their problems are nearly always self-inflicted and they seem helpless to do anything about them until loved ones step in and guide them. I ask myself if Will, who struggled with his love for Bonnie and overcame doubts to marry her, would the very next season suddenly leave her due to feelings of guilt having nothing to with her. Really? I know it is just to tug at heartstrings, but…
So if I place my review on the scales of justice, I hope it reflects that I do like the program and recommend it.
I want to spare a word about the bigots and haters out there who say the show is “woke,” a word used to not share their hate out loud. I reach for sympathy for them and can only say: “Boo-Hoo.” After many decades of all serious roles being white-only, they want period programming to reflect the “reality” of people of color being hidden away except for stereotypical roles. Maybe they weren’t as hidden as all that back then, but they were never represented in a meaningful way on tv and movies, so to be “realistic “ they must be hidden away still. Get over it, please. You may even like yourselves more.
Sorry, a bit long, isn’t this?
