Christine is annoyed that Malcolm didn't see her over her mourning period and slams the door in his face. Ken and his student friends make ban-the-bomb posters until Ida orders them out of the house. Arnold Tanner turns up at No.11 after fifteen years and asks Elsie to give him a divorce so that he can marry Norah Dawson. She refuses and they argue before he storms out. Ena, seeing Arnold leaving the house from her vestry window, spreads it about that Elsie's got a fella. Harry is promoted to inspector at the bus depot.

Elsie believes Dennis is innocent. He remembers that Ena was in the pub at the same time. Ena confirms Dennis didn't go near the till, and tells Annie so. Elsie tells Annie the Tanners are withdrawing their custom from the Rovers. Albert takes to his bed with flu and is nursed by Minnie. Annie discovers both Florrie and Len were on their own in the Rovers when the money went missing. Elsie shocks the Walkers by refusing to go to the Rovers when Linda phones her there from Canada.

Ken is livid about the story in the paper, annoyed that David has let the family down even though he was always viewed as the golden boy. A bad-tempered Len bickers with Jack and Annie over the story. Stan has been put off David by the allegations. Minnie wonders what Wormold wants with Ena.

The men return at 7.00am after spending the night with fifteen women at 32 Bessie Street. They go for an early morning "hair of the dog" in the Rovers and decide to tell everyone Alf tripped and fell and they all took him to hospital. As soon as they see their wives they crack and tell the truth. Ken lectures Susan about bringing Roy Stevenson back home. Elsie runs short of money. Fred tells Annie about Alf going to hospital and is annoyed that the others have confessed. Annie finds out the truth when she rings the hospital and pleases the women by presenting their husbands with a bill for their wives' drinks and refuses Fred his request for a night off. Rita is tired of living in what she considers a dump. Elsie considers asking Mike for the supervisor's job now Steve Fisher has left. Susan asks Ken if he intends to marry Deirdre. Annie tells Ivy that Elsie intends to ask for her job back at the factory. Ivy is livid.

Terry covers his tracks upon realising that he broke into the Corner Shop. Rita suspects Jenny of hiding facts about the crash. Hilda takes offence at Alf's questioning.

As the residents see in New Year, Deirdre realises Ken has spent the day with Wendy and she throws him out. Alec tells Bet he wants to find his daughter. Jim agrees to pay the excess on the new window with Alf claiming the rest on the insurance. Steve and Andy donate their Christmas money. Tracy tries to contact Ken at Wendy's to no avail. Wendy takes Ken in. Alf and Jim make up as the twins try out a JCB on the deserted building site, but it goes out of control and crashes into the shop, smashing the window.

Jenny and Daisy prepare to ring in the new year at the reopened Rovers. Sarah and Adam are drawn back together, while Daniel proves that an auld acquaintance should not be forgot.

Roy makes a timely decision to check on an unwell Carla, Sarah spots an emotional exchange between Daniel and Daisy, and Evelyn applies to university. Cassie delights in winding up Tracy, Lisa confronts Matty over Becky's death, and Dylan calls a truce with Mason.
User Reviews
If I were rating the Coronation Street classic shows from the 60s to the early 90s, I would give it 10 stars. For the last 30 years, however, it would garner more like 5 or 6 stars. This drama started out being fairly realistic, with humor and drama in equal measure, and a cast you pretty much like from top to bottom, and which tried to represent the people of northern England, (Manchester and thereabouts). There were low expectations for the show, but it took off and made rock stars ut of the performers.
Now Coronation Street has become more like U.S. soap operas. Some people say it is the influence of the newer soap operas like East Enders, with its screamfests. So now there is less humor, fewer long-term characters, and murder, murder, murder.
So if you try the current iteration of Coronation Street and find you don't like it plots or pacing, track down some of the older shows and give them a whirl. You just might get hooked on them.
